Tribute to Monsters of Metal 2017

Location: Monkeys Music Club Hamburg-Altona
Date: April 14th 2017

They are among the greatest Metal bands of all time – Saxon and Iron Maiden. Both bands I have experienced several times live. And there are a lot of bands that bring the spirit of this metal veterans on the smaller stages and thus pay homage to their great idols. Two of these tribute bands invited the fans to the Monkeys Music Club, a small club in Hamburg’s Altona district. More pictures can be viewed on Flickr.

Wheels of Steel are a Saxon Tribute band from Hamburg. The idea was born in May 1997 during a Saxon concert in the “Großen Freiheit 36” in Hamburg. Wheels of Steel took their fans on a journey in the years before the turn of the millennium and presented a firework of hits from the first twenty years of Saxon – ‘Eagle Has Landed,’ ‘Ride Like the Wind’ and ‘Crusader,’ just to name a few. And of course, they had to finish the evening with the classic ‘Denim and Leather.’

Setlist Wheels Of Steel:

  • Solid Ball Of Rock
  • 747 – Strangers In The Night
  • Power And The Glory
  • Dogs Of War
  • Eagle Has Landed

  • And The Bands Played On
  • Denim And Leather

Gothenburg is a high-rise of Heavy Metal. World-famous is Gothenburg’s Death Metal with bands like In Flames or At The Gates calling the city home, but they’re not alone. Power Metal bands like the legendary Hammerfall come from Sweden’s second largest city, as does the second band of the evening – Made In Iron.

As you can easily see from the word play, these musicians have dedicated their band to the work of Iron Maiden. And though the Swedes were limited in their set and forced to choose just a few of the band’s countless hits it was no surprise to hear classics like ‘The Trooper,’ ‘The Number of The Beast’ and ‘Fear of The Dark,’ while ‘Run To The Hills’ finished the evening off shortly after midnight.

Setlist Made In Iron:

  • Aces High
  • 2 Minutes to Midnight
  • The Trooper
  • Flight Of Icarus
  • The Evil And That Men Do
  • The Clairvoyant
  • Powerslave
  • The Number Of The Beast
  • Fear Of The Dark

Encore

  • Wasted Years
  • Hallowed By The Name
  • Run To The Hills

Three hours with some of the biggest Metal hits ended with the fans wanting more as if the tribute bands were the real deal. For me, this was three hours of memories of the ‘80s and ‘90s of the last millennium. It was three hours of fun and good music.
