Review: Temperance – Maschere – A Night At The Theater

Written by Rainer Kerber

Temperance was founded in December 2013, and since then Year on year, the Italians have released three full length albums and remains quite active on the world stage touring Europe and the USA on many occasions. They have notably shared the stage with numerous genre greats such as Within Temptation, Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody, and Nightwish.

Just under a year after their latest album, The Earth Embraces Us All. their first live DVD will be released. A very special show was recorded for Maschere – A Night At The Theater featuring a performance in the Teatro Sociale in Alba, which marked an important milestone in the successful career of the band. The participation of a choir and a string quartet ensured that this evening was something special.

The first nine songs of the show come exclusively from The Earth Embraces Us All. That shows a lot of confidence, for  only “Haze” and “Change The Rhyme” are missing on the first of the two DVD’s. If I understand correctly from Amazon, these songs are a bonus on the second disc, along with the classic “Save Me” from the second album, as well as a drum and a bass solo. But let’s stay with DVD number one.

Striking with an excellent sound, which is in no way inferior to the studio productions, Singer Chiara Tricarico proves that her live voice sounds just as powerful and clea – and she also can handle the extreme high notes with ease. As well, the instruments and vocals are expertly mixed with the strings and choir amplifying the sound even more.

In the second part of the show, a mix of songs from the first two albums can be heard. Unfortunately, only the greeting at the beginning of the show is in English, otherwise the announcements are made in Italian leaving foreign fans a little confused at times.

As for the picture quality of the DVD, there‘s not much to say. So far, there is only “At The Edge Of Space” on Youtube, and in this video clip the live show can be seen only in a small frame. But if the quality of the frame is similarly well, then this DVD is also a visual experience for sure.

In Maschere – A Night At The Theater Temperance has captured some magical moments. This DVD is certainly highlight their previous work as well as give a good taste of the new material. It goes without saying that if you’re a longtime fan and you haven’t heard the new material, then you can be looking forward to the further development of Temperance. Now, I’m just waiting for the day when I can finally experience the band live. 8/10
